Every year, spring melt from the Andes floods the land to the west of the mountains and forms ephemeral (short-lived lakes) Waterfalls are created from the runoff which cascades out of the eastern Andes. As a result these waterfalls create  many small shallow lakes, giving food to the region’s waterfowl.
