Glaciares National Park.
The second day of the trip was more spectacular than I could ever had possible anticipated. We traveled 20 miles north of Torres del Paine to fined Los Glaciares National Park. The park is covered by a portion of the Patagonia continental ice sheet and contains thirteen glaciers that flow into the sea. Regarded as one of the world’s natural wonders, the enormous Perito Moreno glacier can be found here. This glacier rises nearly 200 feet above the Iceberg Channel, spanning three miles across, and reaching back 22 miles through the Andes to Lago Argentino. Huge blocks of ice can be seen breaking away from the glacier and crash into the lake with a thunder, creating icebergs that float downstream.
There are many hiking paths that cross widely differing types of
terrain, such a pampas and Magellanic forests, and follow along lakes with huge glaciers and icebergs. |
